RARE Columbian Exposition Ferris Wheel 1893 World's Fair Glass Paperweight OldThis listing is for a rare old original Columbian Exposition Paperweight. This paperweight was made for the World's Columbian Exposition (the official shortened name for the World's Fair: Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair. It was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492.. This incredible piece was quality-made of thick clear glass and features a photo a depiction of the famous Ferris Wheel in the center. I have seen quite a few paperweights featuring the Ferris wheel over the years, but I have only seen this exact one only one other time. It measures roughly 3" across. This was acquired from the liquidation of The Christoper Columbus Museum that contained the most incredible collection of items featuring the Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition!
CONDITION : The glass is is nice shape for being over 125+ years old. No chips, cracks or significant scratches that I could find and still displays wonderfully. It appears that at one time the picture started to separate from the bottom of the paperweight, as is very common to paperweights of this vintage. A previous owner remedied that by putting what appears to be a clay like substance underneath, saving the paperweight from getting any worse. ou can see it and some discoloration in the photos, it adds to the overall patina of the piece. I have tried to make the photos look worse than it actually is, but it was very hard to photograph, being clear glass. Please closely examine the photos for additional details. Be the envy of all your friends with this awesome Advertising Paperweight. A must for any Vintage World's Fair, Christopher Columbus, Chicago, IL, Columbian Exposition or Vintage 1800s or advertising paperweight collector!
Chicago’s World Fair in 1893 is also known as the World Columbian Exposition, a living encyclopedia of 1893. It particularly celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ “Discovery of America.” The United States wanted to show the world that it had become a world class nation with this fair.
The Ferris Wheel, an engineering masterpiece, became the symbol of the fair. Built to rival the 1889 Eiffel Tower. The world’s first Ferris wheel was 250 feet in diameter and could carry 2,160 people in its 36 steel cars that held 60 people each. Fifty cents purchased a three revolution ride. Each revolution took twenty minutes.
The Ferris Wheel was again erected at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition which was also the site of the first Olympics held in the United States. After the Exposition the wheel was scrapped.
